We stock and install American Standard-compatible capacitor replacements throughout Henderson, with most jobs completed the same day for $180 – $340 installed. That price includes the part, the service call, labor, and a quick check of the rest of the system to confirm the capacitor didn’t take anything else down with it. Most homeowners discover a failed capacitor the hard way: the outside unit hums but the fan won’t spin, or the system runs for a few minutes and then shuts off. In July, that’s a house that climbs from 74 to 88 degrees in under an hour, and we treat it like the urgent fix it is.
Which American Standard Models This Applies To
American Standard uses run capacitors and dual-run capacitors across nearly all of its residential condenser lines, from the Silver series through Gold and Platinum, plus its heat pump systems. The spec you’ll see printed right on the side of the old capacitor is what matters most: a rating like 45/5 µF, 370V or 440V, which tells you the microfarad values and voltage tolerance your system was built around. The gotcha in Henderson is this: American Standard units paired with a hard-start kit or a long refrigerant line set often ran a slightly higher microfarad rating than the generic part a handyman installs, and the wrong value will cause the compressor to work harder and die younger. We match the exact spec from the unit’s data plate, not from memory. On OEM versus aftermarket, we’ll be straight with you: American Standard’s OEM capacitors are solid, but Titan HD and Genteq aftermarket equivalents meet or exceed the same specs and often come with a better manufacturing QC record. We carry both on the truck and will quote you the price difference before we touch anything.

Signs Your American Standard Capacitor Replacement Is Failing
- The outside unit hums but the fan won’t turn. The capacitor can’t deliver the starting torque the fan motor needs. You can sometimes push-start the fan with a stick, which confirms the capacitor, not the motor, is usually the culprit. We don’t recommend doing this more than once, since running the system on a dead capacitor strains the motor windings.
- The system runs for ten or twenty minutes and then trips. As the capacitor loses microfarad rating, the compressor pulls more current to stay running, which overheats it and kicks the thermal overload. What you’ll notice inside is uneven cooling and a system that gives up in the afternoon heat.
- The outdoor unit starts inconsistently, sometimes taking a few tries. A capacitor near the end of its life can’t always hold enough charge to start the compressor the first time. This is the stage where most Henderson systems are limping along, and catching it now saves the compressor.
- You see a bulging or leaking capacitor. If you take the panel off (with the power off at the breaker), the capacitor’s top will look swollen or you’ll see a brown oil film around it. That’s dielectric fluid, and the capacitor is done. Don’t touch it without discharging it first.
- The fan runs but the compressor won’t engage. On dual-run capacitors, one side powers the fan and the other powers the compressor. You can lose the compressor side while the fan keeps spinning, which is exactly why a visual check matters.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Henderson, an American Standard capacitor replacement runs $180 – $340 installed, and the range usually comes down to three things: whether it’s a single or dual capacitor, what brand of replacement you choose, and whether it’s a simple swap or we’re also diagnosing something downstream. The part itself runs $25 – $75 on the truck, our service call and diagnostic time runs $89 – $129, and installation labor makes up the rest. You’ll get a written price before any work starts, every time. That’s not a special request, it’s how we run every visit. And if the capacitor fails again within 365 days, our Done Right Promise covers the replacement part and labor. No fine print. If the capacitor swap reveals a failing fan motor or a compressor drawing too many amps, we’ll show you the readings and quote that work separately before we do anything.
DIY or Call Us?
We’re not going to tell you never to open your own unit, because we know plenty of Henderson homeowners who are handy and careful. What we will say is this: a capacitor stores enough voltage to stop your heart, even after the breaker is off, if it isn’t discharged correctly. That’s the line where we stop encouraging DIY on this particular part. If you want to check for a bulging top or oil residue with the breaker off, that’s reasonable and safe. If you want to attempt the swap, we’re happy to give you the microfarad and voltage specs over the phone. But the honest guidance from Luis Serrano, our owner, is that the $180 – $340 installed price includes a discharged part, a correctly matched capacitor, a check of the contactor and wiring while we’re in there, and a system that starts when you need it to. Call (775) 257-9022 if you’d rather have it done today and done right.
FAQs
A capacitor in the Henderson climate typically lasts 5 – 8 years, not the 10 – 15 a manufacturer rates for milder climates. The heat here, especially on units running 9 – 10 months a year, bakes the internal dielectric fluid and shortens the life. If the unit sits on the south or west side of the house with direct afternoon sun, expect the shorter end. Call (775) 257-9022 and we’ll check yours while we’re there.
No, a capacitor can’t be repaired, and that’s universally true across every brand. The internal dielectric material breaks down and there’s no way to reverse it. The good news is that replacement is one of the least expensive repairs any American Standard system will ever need.
The swap itself takes 20 – 40 minutes, and we carry American Standard-compatible run and dual-run capacitors on the truck. In most cases we can have your system running the same day you call, and for a capacitor failure we treat that as a priority, not a wait-till-Thursday job.
We stock the full common range: 35/5, 40/5, 45/5, 50/5, 60/5, and the single-run versions, in both 370V and 440V ratings. If your unit needs something unusual, we can source it same or next day through our local supply partners. We also carry parts for Carrier, Trane, and Lennox systems, but American Standard is a brand we service regularly across Henderson.
A comfortable house in August isn’t a luxury, it’s just a system that was set up right. If your American Standard capacitor is failing, or you suspect it might be, call (775) 257-9022. We’ll get a live person on the phone, send a background-checked technician in a clean uniform, and hand you a written price before any work begins. Shoe covers and drop cloths come standard, and we’ll send you a photo of the clean-up before we head out. That’s how we work in every Henderson home, from Green Valley to MacDonald Ranch.
